Burning time is useful. It is also not enough.

A lot of shisha charcoal buyers ask one question first: how many hours can it burn?

Fair question. Also incomplete.

Burning time is easy to brag about. A supplier can say three hours, four hours, even more if the test is done gently enough. But shisha charcoal is not bought for a laboratory nap. It has to sit on foil or a heat management device, keep the bowl alive, avoid harsh spikes, and not turn the first ten minutes into a small punishment.

That is why serious buyers should test the heat curve.

What is a heat curve?

The heat curve is simply how the charcoal behaves over time. Does it start too aggressively? Does it drop after 25 minutes? Does it stay steady enough for a lounge session? Does ash build up so quickly that staff need to babysit every table?

A charcoal that burns long but gives unstable heat can still disappoint customers. In a shisha lounge, consistency is not a technical luxury. It is the business model.

A simple buyer-side test

You do not need a fancy lab for the first check. Use the same bowl, same tobacco, same foil or heat device, same number of briquettes, and same airflow. Record the experience at 10, 20, 40, 60, and 90 minutes.

The point is not to create a perfect scientific paper. The point is to remove guesswork before you order cartons for a market that will complain faster than it compliments.

• Ignition time: how long it takes before the charcoal is ready to use.
• First heat strength: whether the early heat is smooth or too aggressive.
• Flavor harshness: whether the first minutes make the session unpleasant.
• Ash behavior: whether ash stays controlled or falls too quickly.
• Middle-session drop: whether heat fades before the customer is done.
